You tell me Hiatus Kaiyote and I tell, you they are from the heavens themselves!Ī band that specialises in Neo-Soul, a genre you rarely ever hear of, this may even be your first time coming across this genre, but I assure you if you put your faith in Hiatus Kaiyote, then you, my friend have nothing at all to fear!įinding them by accident I will admit, as I am a fan of Q - Tip and a friend told of a collaboration he had done with an Australian band, I will admit that I was a bit confused due to the fact that I did not even realise there were many Australian artists out there and that Q - Tip would perform with a boyband. Since then, the band have released another, similarly acclaimed studio album entitled “Choose Your Weapon”, and continued to be one of the most exciting and esoteric groups of their generation. This re-released version of the album included a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest legend Q-Tip, who's just one of the many musical icons who've given the band their seal of approval. The year after they formed, the band self-released their debut album “Tawk Tomahawk”, an album that was so acclaimed that it netted them a deal with the Sony Masterworks imprint label Flying Buddha, who re-released the album in 2013. She has been the driving force of the band since the very beginning, at first performing solo concerts before drafting in bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin and multi-instrumentalist Perrin Moss to form a proper band around her songs.

It would take a very special band to live up to that, but fortunately, in the capable hands of lead singer and songwriter Nai Palm, Hiatus Kaiyote live up to that promise and more besides. Previous winners include LPs by A.B.Original, Courtney Barnett, The Jezabels, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Sampa the Great (twice) and last year’s champ, The Avalanches’ We Will Always Love You.In an age where a lot of artists go to extreme, and some might say ill-advised, lengths to stay ahead of the curve and out of the crowd, Hiatus Kaiyote go further than most by describing their sound as “Multi-Dimensional, Polyrhythmic Gangster Sh*t”. Launched in 2005, the AMP is recognized as the most prestigious award for Australian recording artists honoring the album as an art form. In another development, EMI, Virgin and Island have partnered with The Soundmerch AMP, which sees each label contribute A$3,000 cash for a “shortlist funding pool” that will be used to offset nominated artists’ out-of-pocket when attending the final. The judges’ final decision will be made earlier on the day. The winner will receive a check for $30,000 ($21,400), courtesy of headline sponsor Soundmerch, the independent Australian merchandise company, during a special event March 3 in Melbourne. I sincerely thank the Soundmerch AMP team of judges – their donation of time and passion is much greater than what most people would think.” “It’s incredibly diverse and truly captures another year of the world’s best music. “This is a very strong list,” comments Soundmerch AMP founder and prize director Scott B.

The nine standouts, unveiled today, are judged on creative merit over mainstream popularity. The AMP, now in its 17th year, is inspired by Britain’s Mercury Music Prize and decided by a music industry panel, which is tasked with identifying Australia’s most important releases of the previous year.Īfter reviewing over 460 eligible Australian albums, the AMP’s judges last December reduced the batch to a longlist of 110 titles. Albums by Genesis Owusu, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Hiatus Kaiyote are among the nine finalists for the coveted Australian Music Prize, details for which were announced Wednesday morning (Feb.
